Hoje é o Dia Internacional da Biodiversidade, a data foi instituída pela Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) para conscientizar as pessoas sobre a necessidade de se conservar e proteger a diversidade de vida no planeta.
Os termos diversidade biológica ou biodiversidade foram criados na década de 1980 para se referir ao número de espécies de seres vivos existentes no planeta, incluindo todos os vegetais, animais e microrganismos.
É por meio da flora e da fauna que os ecossistemas regulam os processos climáticos, filtram e purificam a água, reciclam nutrientes, mantêm a fertilidade dos solos, se tornam fontes naturais de recursos como alimentos.
O Brasil é o país que detém uma das maiores biodiversidades de flora e fauna do mundo. Mas com o avanço do mundo moderno e sua capacidade para poluir, muitas espécies de seres vivos estão ameaçadas, os cientistas acreditam que cerca de seis espécies entrem em extinção a cada ano no planeta. A maioria delas são animais pequenos localizados em áreas muito restritas e mais sensíveis às mudanças climáticas.
Mas as plantas e os animais de grande porte também correm diversos riscos, muitos ligados ao tráfico ilegal ou mesmo ao abandono de espécies exóticas em locais diferentes de seu habitat natural, fazendo com que elas entrem em competição com as espécies nativas por alimento e espaço.
Para proteger a fauna e a flora, os governos criam programas de pesquisa, conservação, manejo, fiscalização, educação ambiental entre outras políticas públicas e entidades não governamentais também desenvolvem projetos de conservação.
Cuidar melhor da nossa biodiversidade deixou de ser uma opção, para ser a única alternativa se quisermos manter a qualidade de vida em nosso planeta.
