O Dia Mundial do Meio Ambiente é comemorado em 5 de junho. Essa data foi instituída pela Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) em 1972, tendo como objetivo principal chamar a atenção de todas as camadas da população para os problemas ambientais e para a importância da preservação dos recursos naturais, que até então eram considerados, por muitos, como inesgotáveis.
Espera-se que, com o Dia Mundial do Meio Ambiente, a sociedade obtenha informações importantes sobre os principais impactos do homem no planeta e tenha uma postura mais consciente em relação aos usos dos recursos naturais. Também tem a função de lembrar a população e os governantes sobre a importância da preservação dos nossos recursos e da necessidade da elaboração de leis que garantam o desenvolvimento, mas sem afetar de maneira negativa o meio em que vivemos, ou seja, que garantam um desenvolvimento sustentável.
Para que a conscientização ocorra, a cada ano um tema é debatido amplamente ao redor do mundo. São realizadas campanhas que mobilizam não apenas o cidadão comum, como também governantes e empresas.
Em 2024, a Arábia Saudita será a sede dos encontros do Dia Mundial do Meio Ambiente. Os temas deste ano terão como foco principal a restauração de terras, desertificação e resiliência à seca.
Dados da ONU apresentam que 40% das terras do planeta estão degradadas, afetando diretamente metade da população mundial e ameaçando cerca de metade do PIB global (US$ 44 trilhões). A entidade também destaca que o número e a duração das secas aumentaram em 29% desde 2000.
Já o Dia Mundial do Meio Ambiente de 2025 será sediado na Coreia do Sul. O evento do próximo ano terá como foco a poluição por plásticos a nível global.
