A “família Manson” foi um grupo liderado por Charles Manson, uma espécie de líder espiritual e político, nos anos 1960, nos Estados Unidos. Manson exercia uma enorme influência manipuladora sobre seus seguidores, a quem ele denominava de “família”. Eles se envolveram em uma série de crimes e assassinatos motivados por uma mistura de ideias distorcidas, como uma suposta “guerra racial” e uma visão apocalíptica do mundo.
Leslie Van Houten, hoje com 73 anos, tinha 19 quando se juntou à “família Manson”, uma seita liderada pelo criminoso Charles Manson. Ela era a mais nova do grupo.
Leslie foi julgada pela primeira vez em 1971 por um assassinato cometido em agosto de 1969. Na Justiça, ela contou que esfaqueou cerca de 15 vezes a barriga de Rosemary LaBianca, a época com 38 anos, limpou suas digitais de objetos que poderiam incriminá-la e queimou as próprias roupas depois dos crimes. Ela também disse que pegou queijo e leite achocolatado da geladeira de Rosemary e do marido dela, que também foi assassinado, antes de sair da casa dos dois.
O grupo escreveu frases na parede e na geladeira com o sangue das vítimas (“morte aos porcos” e “helter skelter”, o nome que Manson dava às teorias apocalípticas de guerra racial dele).
Na noite anterior ao assassinato do casal Labianca, a “família” Manson tinha invadido a casa do diretor de filmes Roman Polanski. O cineasta não estava em casa, mas a mulher dele, Sharon Tate, de 26 anos, grávida de 8 meses, e quatro amigos estavam no local e foram assassinados.
A Suprema Corte da Justiça da Califórnia decidiu que ela atende as condições para passar para a liberdade condicional. O governador do estado, Gavin Newson, poderia ter tentado reverter a decisão, mas ele decidiu não fazer isso, apesar de não concordar com a decisão da Justiça: “Mais de 50 anos após o culto de Manson cometer esses assassinatos brutais, as famílias das vítimas ainda sentem o impacto”, diz o comunicado do governador.
A juíza Helen I. Bendix, da Justiça da Califórnia, disse em sua decisão que “Van Houten tem apresentado esforços de reabilitação extraordinários, perspicácia, arrependimento, planos realistas de liberdade condicional, apoio da família e amigos, relatórios institucionais favoráveis”.
Leslie já disse que se arrependeu por participar dos assassinatos. Segundo ela, na época dos crimes ela estava com problemas mentais que eram agravados pelo uso de LSD e que ela acreditava que Charles Manson era Jesus Cristo.
Morto na prisão em 2017, Charles Manson é um dos assassinos americanos mais notórios de todos os tempos. Em 1971, foi sentenciado à pena de morte, mas a pena foi posteriormente mudada para prisão perpétua, junto com quatro de seus seguidores pelo sangrento massacre de agosto de 1969, no qual sete pessoas morreram.
